I have always been interested in fashion and dressing up for as long as I can remember. When I was little, I always made it a point to “match” everything, and even wore dresses everyday to school for my entire 2nd grade school year. This interest has stuck with me to the present day and has grown into something that I have become very passionate about. I plan to take this passion and turn it into a career. I attend FIDM LA as a Fashion Design major. Coming from a small town and living with a small budget, I have to be creative in achieving the kind of style I like. This blog is a side project that shows that fashion can be affordable by posting my favorite outfits, DIY sewing projects, and documents my journey at FIDM.
Last night my boyfriend and I went to watch Horrible Bosses(for the second time) with two of our friends. Here's what I wore:
(Shirt-Old Navy $20. Pants, Earrings+ Rose Ring-all F21$6,Accessories $3.50 each. Shoes- Payless $23. Bag-Salvation Army $4. Gold ring-Gifted. Total cost of outfit-$60.)
I like the simple yet elegant look you have going on. What are your thoughts on accessories? Should a girl (I'm a guy interested in the subject) have one expensive purse, say and just let that be the center piece to her ensemble of affordable clothing? Since accessorizing is just as important as the clothes themselves in fashion what are your thoughts on keeping it within a budget? Is it more difficult to be creative in that way?
I believe accessories can complete an outfit and can also take a look from casual/day to night/dressy. It is good to have "investment pieces" which can be anything from a purse to a really good winter coat. A purse would be a great first investment piece because it is something you can use every day and you will definitely get your "money's worth" out of it. I would recommend buying cheaper accessories, that way you can have a wider variety, and they also last a long time(unlike a cheap piece of clothing or shoes). I get most of my accessories from Forever 21. To keep your wallet happy and your closet full, I would suggest shopping at vintage/thrift stores and altering them to fit your size/style. It's amazing what you can find at them and the possibilities are endless if you're creative. You just have to know where to shop(in-store and online)and you can achieve any look you want on a very affordable budget!
Is it important to maintain a sense of personal style in fashion or is keeping with latest trends the way to go? It almost seems like you can't have both - you might be able to push the limits of whats 'in' these days by adding your own flair or touch but to go way beyond or to go backwards according to what is in style today because you might prefer a certain look - what are you thoughts on leading trends in fashion, following them, or completely discarding them and doing whatever (like some of the really eccentric runway shows where models are wearing rubber suits with balloons on them, etc.)?
It is very important to maintain personal style even when new trends appear season after season. I dislike being a trend slave, mainly because not all trends work for one person. You have to know which ones fit not only your personality, but also your physical attributes. By knowing which trends work for you in both of these areas, you can begin to alter them and turn them into your own. Whether people are aware or not, those crazy runway shows we see with girls wearing rubber suits and balloons actually determine what we see in our local stores. So unconsciously, we are affected by trends no matter how much we might not follow them. On the other hand, what has become a big phenomena over the past few years is trends starting on the streets. It is these people that have original style and their own idea of fashion that have created waves in the fashion world and are now considered a big force in determining new trends. I am obsessed with this "street style" because it is practical yet fresh and new. I don't understand fashion that isn't practical or why things are hyped up if no one would actually wear certain things in everyday life. Just doesn't make sense to me, but I have a lot to learn about how the industry works. :] Hope I answered your questions!
You did! Thanks a lot! And that is really cool that the general public has such an affect on the industry - its nice and really interesting that big fashion gurus are looking to the streets for inspiration and whats hot now. maybe theyll be looking at you struttin' down 4th ave. for inspiration someday soon!
Achieve your dream girl!!
